Microneedling works precisely because it creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin — which means a real (if brief) recovery period is part of the process, not a sign of a problem. Here's a realistic look at what that recovery typically involves.

Immediately after treatment

Expect visible redness, similar to a mild-to-moderate sunburn, along with a warm or slightly tight sensation in the treated area. This is the expected, normal response to the treatment.

Day 1–2

Redness is typically most noticeable during this window. Some mild swelling or flaking can occur, particularly in more sensitive areas. Most patients find they can return to normal daily activities, though makeup is often best avoided for at least the first day to let the skin begin its healing process undisturbed.

Day 3–5

Redness generally continues to fade, and skin texture may feel slightly rough or dry as the surface renews. This is a normal part of the healing process.

Days after that

Most visible redness has typically resolved by this point, though the deeper collagen-building process that gives microneedling its longer-term benefit continues well beyond what's visible on the surface — which is part of why microneedling is generally recommended as a series of treatments rather than a single session.

General aftercare guidance

  • Keep skin clean and gently moisturized
  • Use sun protection — treated skin can be more sensitive to UV exposure during healing
  • Avoid harsh actives (retinoids, strong exfoliants) until your skin has fully recovered, per Erin's specific guidance
  • Avoid picking or exfoliating treated skin

Why multiple sessions matter

SEA Medical Wellness performs microneedling using SkinPen, a medical-grade device, and best results are typically achieved with three or more sessions. Each session builds on the last as part of a longer collagen-remodeling process — a single treatment can offer a nice refresh, but the more meaningful texture improvements tend to show up over a treatment series.
